How can I deal with humiliation and stop worrying about it?
Q. I constantly worry about these things. I'm so afraid of humiliation bc I dont wanna ruin my "coolness". I'm going back to school tomorrow and I keep thinking of stuff like "what if I fell down the steps in front of everyone" and "what if I get beat up in front of everyone" "How would i get over it? etc... None of this ever happens to me but im always worried about it. I just want some advice im not looking for insults.

A. You are too concerned with what other people think of your "image". You seem somewhat insecure. Learn to like yourself the way that you are, mistakes and all (everybody makes them), and you will be seen as more "cool" than you are now. A truly cool person is one who isn't bothered by anything -- someone who can laugh off humiliation because she is so self assured that she knows that these little embarrassing moments will pass, and no one will care about it 20-30 years from now. Think about how cool Sexy Homer is. he does stupid things all of the time, and he is still darn sexxxyyy!!!

What is the best way to respond to ridicule and humiliation?
Q. In the office where I work, some of the coworkers use destructive criticism and mockery. When this happens I do not function. My mind is no longer able to concentrate. So far I have chosen not to engage in verbal conflict as I abhor confrontation.

A. The first step is to tell them you do not appreciate their comments and would like it to stop. If you have to tell them a second time also tell them you will go to your manager and human resources, if they continue. If you go to your manager and human resources you need to be specific. Don't just complain. Keep a record of what was said, by whom, when and under what circumstances. Also what your responses were and let them know that your attempts to get your coworkers to stop have failed. As a manager I expect my employees to handle their problems amongst themselves and only bring issues to me that they have been unable to resolve. Do not say that you are "unable to work", say it "makes it difficult" to work, or words to that… [cont.]
