Contentment is the experience of satisfaction and being at ease in one's situation.

Judaism

Some of the earliest references to the state of contentment are found in the reference to the midah (personal attribute) of Samayach B’Chelko. The expression comes from the word samayach (root Sin-Mem-Chet) meaning "happiness, joy or contentment", and chelko (root Chet-Lamed-Kuf) meaning "portion, lot, or piece", and combined mean contentment with one’s lot in life. The attribute is referred to in the Mishnahic source which says

“Ben Zoma said: Who is rich? Those who are happy with their portion.”

The origins of contentment in Jewish culture reflect an even older thinking reflected in the Book of Proverbs which says,

A joyful heart makes a cheerful face; A sad heart makes a despondent mood. All the days of a poor person are wretched, but contentment is a feast without end.

The issue of contentment remained in Jewish thinking during the Middle Ages as evident for example in the writings of Solomon Ibn Gabirol, an eleventh-century Spanish poet-philosopher who taught,

Who seeks more than he needs, hinders himself from enjoying what he has. Seek what you need and give up what you need not. For in giving up what you don’t need, you’ll learn what you really do need.

Any good ideas on how to teach a bunch of kids about contentment?
Q. I am a 21 year old male who is supposed to present the children's story in front of church this sunday. My presentation must touch on the topic of contentment. Any ideas of games, stories, activities, ect. would be most appriciated. I want it to be both interesting for the kids and adults. Thanks.

A. Hey man I would suggest giving a personal testimony here. Share some experience in your life where the Lord has helped you be content despite circumstances. Share your feelings about how you are living with joy in your heart because of what God has done for you. Mention that no matter what happens you have the peace and joy of God in you. I would touch on how society teaches us that our reason for living is the pursuit of self-enjoyment, everything we do is to make us happier. The real key to happiness is doing good to others, though. So you could share how something you did for someone made you feel better, also. Good luck man!

What is contentment? Is it ever possible to be contented?
Q. Have you ever, at any one time, had the feeling that life is bad, real bad, and you wish you were in another situation? So what exactly is contentment?

A. "Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want. It is the realization of how much you already have." Just think about it, sometimes we are so caught up with ourselves that we fail to realize that when the door of happiness closes, another opens. So let's not look so long at that closed door for we might miss the new one which has been opened for us. It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it. Moreover, it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives. Just keep on believing that and you're gonna be alright. And remember, the happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Cheer up...it's not the… [cont.]
