Hostility (also called inimicality) is a form of angry internal rejection or denial in psychology. It is a part of personal construct psychology, developed by George Kelly. In everyday speech it is more commonly used as a synonym for anger and aggression. In psychological terms, Kelly defined hostility as the willful refusal to accept evidence that one's perceptions of the world are wrong. Instead of reconsidering, the hostile person attempts to force or coerce the world to fit their view, even if this is a forlorn hope, and however harmful the cost. While testing theories against reality is a necessary part of life, and persistence in the face of failure is often a necessary part of invention or discovery, in the case of hostility there is the distinction that the evidence is not assessed and a decision made to try again. Instead the evidence is suppressed or denied, and deleted from awareness - the unfavorable evidence which might suggest a prior belief is flawed is instead ignored and willfully avoided. Psychologically, it can be said that reality is being held for ransom, and in this sense hostility is a form of psychological extortion - an attempt to force reality to produce the desired feedback, in order that preconceptions become validated. In this sense, hostility is a response that forms part of discounting of unwanted cognitive dissonance. GNU Free Documentation License Why do I feel hostility towards my old friends? Q. I recently graduated high school and I've been wanting to make new friends because a lot of my friends from high school have kids can't go out and have fun. Here lately, I've gotten an attitude where I don't even want to talk to them anymore. I've become really snobbish. As ashamed as I am to admit it, I feel like I'm better than them. Has anyone ever felt this way? And why do you think I'm being so stuck up towards my old friends? Asked by oceanic_enigma - Thu Jun 18 09:15:43 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. yeah im the same, its because you get to go out and have fun and theyre tied down whilst still young. i feel like a lot of the people i went to school with now have done nothing with themslves, didnt even get a proper education as they were too intent on settling down young. Answered by lily - Thu Jun 18 09:27:10 2009 Why is there so much hostility between Christians and Atheists? Q. They're just beefing at each other because of their beliefs. Asked by F.Y. Too - Tue Nov 10 04:03:24 2009 - - 24 Answers - 0 Comments A. The problem with this Y/A section is that we as Christians are heavily outnumbered by poseurs and folks who need to argue thru belittling others. In fact, they would probably claim that my statement is belittling when it is simply observation. Jesus sent us to evangelize. Society and crumbling morality convince us that to be Christian we must compromise and bend, but that is the complete opposite of our mission. I choose not to knock on doors, I debate the issues here. Q. Like homicides. If you think of one how many years of colledge would I have to do. Would I have to get a bachelors or masteres degree? Asked by Mischa - Sun Mar 25 14:48:10 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ummm... That would be the police department!! Just contact your local police department and see what the requirements are. I can't give you specific information because they vary to much from country to country and from department to department. Most police departments don't require a degree, (though I am sure one would help). They can teach you what you need to know, in fact they prefer that because they want you to do your job THEIR way. That is what police academy's are for. They are more interested in what you bring to the table as a person. Did you do well in school? Did you do athletics? Are you patient and hardworking? If you do well as a patrolman, then you can work your way up to detective over time; through a system of… [cont.] Answered by Larry R - Sun Mar 25 15:01:52 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Hostility" Hostility builds to bursting - Courier Mail
